Dr. Don Speck is a third generation orthodontist who has treated over 17,000 patients in his thirty year career. He grew up, and now practices, in the West University area of Houston, Texas. Dr. Speck is an Eagle Scout, and was an All-State swimmer and an honors graduate at Lamar High School. He attended Tulane University on a swimming scholarship where he was selected to be a member of three national honorary academic fraternities (in biology, psychology and German) and graduated with honors in 1973. During his time in New Orleans he enjoyed working for two years as a waiter at the famed Brennan’s Restaurant in the French Quarter.
Growing up in a dental family (grandfather, father, and two brothers with dental degrees), Dr. Speck’s dental education started early as he worked as a lab technician in his father’s orthodontic practice during high school and summers during college. His professional education was obtained at the University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston where he received a dental degree in 1979 and completed a two year post doctorate residency in orthodontics in 1981. He complemented this training with a preceptorship under the guidance of Dr. Robert Ricketts, one of the most famous innovators, researchers and clinicians in the field of orthodontics, in Pacific Palisades, California.
Dr. Speck is a member of the Foundation for Orthodontic Research, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southwest Society of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists, and the University of Texas Orthodontic Alumni Association. Locally, Dr. Speck was the driving force behind the Houstonian grassroots movement's Save the Shamrock committee in 1986, in which he organized a human ring of over 3,000 people to protest the demolition of the historic Shamrock Hilton Hotel. Unfortunately, historic preservation did not have political support at that time and the hotel was demolished in 1987. Recently, Dr. Speck was chosen to receive both the 2017 America's Best Doctors and Dentists Award and the 2017 Houston's Top Dentists Award. Dr. Speck also gives back to his community by supporting many fund raising events and charitable causes. He is also active in local historic preservation organizations.
Dr. Speck is married to his sweetheart, the former Cindy Willhouse of Davenport, Iowa and together they have seven wonderful sons and one beautiful daughter. Prior to being responsible for such a large family he was an accomplished multisport enthusiast having competed in the 28.5 mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, the Hawaiian Ironman and many other endurance events. Dr. Speck enjoys a less competitive life now, being happy as a husband, dad and an orthodontist.
